Altered Threads: Shirt Mixed Media Makeover with the Crafty Chica! (Kathy Cano-Murillo)

In this workshop, we’ll transform a plain button-up shirt into a mixed media art piece using a variety of surface design techniques. From carving your own stamps to hand-printing directly on fabric, layering appliqués and repurposed t-shirt graphics—you’ll explore the art of storytelling through textiles.
Kathy will guide you through her signature process of intentional layering, color mixing, and honoring cultural roots through pattern and symbolism. This isn't just a class—it's a celebration of identity, creativity, and courage to wear your art on your sleeve (literally!).
Whether you're an established artist looking to explore textiles or simply craving a fresh way to express your style, this workshop invites you to embrace imperfection, experiment like crazy, and make something truly in your own style.
All materials provided. Bring your own lightweight button-up denim shirt or select one from our curated stash. Come ready to paint, stamp, stitch, and shine!
The idea is that you can continue to work on this like a journal. Except the journal is your shirt! (Please note: photos are from purses made using this technique. We are Kathy’s first group to do this on shirts!)
Day one:
We will gather and make accessories to add to our shirt.
Choose a shirt and use fabric dye.
Carve stamps to stamp on the shirt.
Cut up old t-shirts and assorted fabric and create appliques to use on the shirt.
UV resin buttons
Chain and charm brooches
Day Two:
Your shirt will be dyed, dried and ready for transforming!
Set out the shirt and arrange the items.
Printmaking on the shirt, accents added with fabric markers.
Stitching on embroidered designs, adding trims, appliques.
Replacing buttons with the ones we made the day before
There is room for 12 participants, so book your space early as this class is very popular!
